Wasatch Environmental Part of Facilitation Team in 2016 $3.2 Million Land Transfer in Mill Creek Canyon

Under the direction of the Trust for Public Land, Wasatch Environmental provided environmental research and supportive services as part of the due diligence efforts leading to the transfer of 848 acres in Mill Creek Canyon from the Boy Scouts of America to the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest.

The BSA Great Salt Lake Council is transferring most of its lands outside of Camp Tracy, which was built over a century ago on property donated from a philanthropist who acquired old mining claims. These parcels around the camp in Mill Creek Canyon extend into Church Fork, Thaynes Canyon, and Rattlesnake Gulch.

As a locally owned and operated environmental science firm, Wasatch was keenly aware of the magnitude of this transaction. The land transfer, financed with $3.2 million from the Land and Water Conservation Fund, now gives the public permanent access to developed trail systems and forest in Mill Creek Canyon.

The transfer of these lands to the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest will also help to further a proposed 27-mile extension of the Bonneville Shoreline Trail from Parleys Canyon to Sandy. According to the Bonneville Shoreline Trail Coalition, an organization spearheading the development of the Bonneville Shoreline Trail, the Rattlesnake trailhead parcel is a critical part of that extension and key to accessing the Bonneville Shoreline Trail in Mill Creek Canyon.
